The Texarkana, Arkansas Police Department is warning residents about a new scam involving unexpected packages.

Police say the package may arrive with no return address and include a low-cost item and a QR code. Scammers hope curiosity will lead you to scan the code for more information.

Authorities say this is known as a “brushing” scam. Scanning the QR code can send you to a fake website that asks for personal information, giving cybercriminals access to your data.

Police advise never scanning QR codes from unexpected packages, changing passwords if you receive unordered items, and checking your online purchase history. If you can’t verify the package, discard it.
